Search “color analysis” on TikTok, and you’ll find thousands of people’s reactions to how the appearance of their complexion changes depending on the surrounding swatches of color — but how accurate is it really, and what are the benefits of doing color analysis in-person as opposed to online?
First of all, what is a color analysis?
@hauskris Replying to @isaidwoahhhhh color analysis vlog!!!! Honestly SO insightful & fun. I went to Abby Young, she’s a stylist in the bay area and she offers color analysis! #coloranalysis #coloranalysistok #coloranalysisseasons #bayareacoloranalysis #colors #dietcokebreak #middaydietcoke #truelemon #wintercolors #wintercolorpalette #chickfila #coloranalysissanfrancisco #personalcoloranalysis
Traditionally, color analyses are performed by color experts, and consist of a procession of seasonal color swatches being draped one by one across your chest. The shades vary in brightness, warmth, and undertones, and will either highlight, draw attention away from, or “wash out” your face. When identifying your best colors, we look for the ones that brighten your complexion, and balance the undertones in your skin. At Abby Young Styling, we also compare high versus low contrast prints as well as metallics to give you an even more comprehensive idea of your perfect color palette.
You may have seen the TikTok filters that speed through the seasons of colors by way of 20+ streaks that surround your face. While it may appear to be an efficient color analysis tool, the results are not as reliable as they are accessible. Because your skin’s undertone is one of the key factors in distinguishing your best colors from the least best, it’s critical to see oneself in bright, natural light. Your phone’s camera may automatically adjust the lighting in your room, or be ill-equipped to pick up on the subtle undertones in your skin and the small flecks of color in your irises. I’ve also found that the same shades will look completely different on my clients after they change their hair color, which is another element that a color analysis filter will overlook by default.
Another flaw in the online color analysis process is that the colors are boxed into Spring, Summer, Fall & Winter categories, which will lead you to believe that you belong to only one of four seasons. I can say with confidence that while there may be one that has a slightly higher success rate, your colors will most certainly span across all of the seasons.
There’s just nothing like having a color analysis in person, where you’d be able to have all these key elements accounted for! With our Style Consultations appointments, you’ll receive a Style Profile with your Silhouette Analysis results, directional shopping advice on what styles, cuts, and necklines will best flatter your silhouette, and a sorted color palette with your best colors and their respective names.
