Instead, imagine you’re getting dressed for the same event: a fall picnic, birthday dinner, barbecue, or afternoon together. Everyone’s level of formality should make sense together, and the colors should relate without being identical. For example, instead of putting everyone in white shirts and jeans, you might build the family’s outfits around navy, soft blue, cream, and denim.
There is a visual connection, but everyone still looks like themselves. That’s what photographs naturally.
Start With Your Fall Color Palette

For fall family photos, I particularly like building around a defined color family rather than choosing one exact color.
Here are three directions to consider.

Palette: Blue + Baby Blue + Navy
Using different shades from the same color family is one of the easiest ways to make a family look coordinated without actually matching.
For this look, everyone wears a variation of blue, but the depth and placement of the color changes from person to person.
Women: Navy midi dress or skirt with simple gold or silver jewelry and a neutral shoe.
Men: Baby-blue button-down with navy trousers or dark denim.
Kid 1: Medium-blue sweater or polo with neutral trousers.
Kid 2: Light-blue dress, knit set, or sweater with navy accessories.
The variation between light, medium, and dark blue creates enough contrast that everyone remains visually distinct while the overall photograph still feels connected.

Palette: Blue + Green + Black + Grey + White
A cool color palette gives you more variety while maintaining a cohesive undertone throughout the family’s outfits.

Women: Plum or burgundy midi dress with simple neutral accessories.
