I hope the 2023 has been treating everyone well so far, and that the new year has left you all feeling refreshed. It’s always a good time to bring some exciting colors into our lives, and Pantone always delivers with some good inspiration. Today I wanted to give you some tips on how to wear Pantone’s Color of the Year, and what kinds of things the color can communicate through clothing. First of all, it’s important to discuss why the company chooses a color each year, and why Viva Magenta was crowned the winner for 2023.
The color institute created the Color of the Year program back in 1999 to inspire discussions among designers and non-designers about their relationships with color: that is, what kinds of memories do certain colors evoke? What cultural significance does a person or group associate with a color, and how do these values shared around the world?
“Viva Magenta is also a hybrid color, one that comfortably straddles the physical and virtual in our multi-dimensional world.” -Pantone
The hybrid-ness of Viva Magenta is highlighted well by the designs released by Pantone upon their announcement in December of 2022. Each image appears to be a celebration of not only the color’s dynamism, but also the sheer talent of graphic designers in their ability to create realist and surrealist augmented realities, and the advancement of technology to date.
But how do I wear it? There are so many ways to rock Viva Magenta. You can…
Use Viva Magenta as a way to step into fashion of the future:
- Channel 60’s space age-style, by wearing a magenta vinyl trench coats and lighter toned skirt, or a long sleeved magenta shift dress.
Use Viva Magenta as a study on color theory:
- Bright out the coral, purple, and orange tint with this asymmetrical jumpsuit from Diarrablue, and the matching headwrap in atoll rose.
Viva Magenta to express:
- Confidence
- Positive energy
- Excitement
- An awareness of trends.
- Matching sets have been all the rage: try wearing a pair of statement heels like Jimmy Choo’s new Flaca Sandal, with the matching Bon Bon purse
- Wear a satin magenta midi skirt with an off-white sweater
