Blazers will forever be a business-casual classic — but the wrong fit, color, and length can easily make your look feel dated… And not in a cute retro way. Carrying some of 2022’s style into the new year, longline blazers and matching sets are here to stay for the near future. Read more to find out what other work-friendly fashion trends you can expect to see in 2023, and discover a few interesting ways to style these pieces!
Eye-catching Blazers
Modern style has finally begun to phase out of the neutrals and lighter earth-tones that have had the fashion world in a chokehold for the last few years, and gray and rich jewel tones have to take their place. For those with a shorter torso and longer legs, try a longline blazer with matching trousers for a trendy-yet-classy monochromatic look. If you want to stand out amongst the crowd, I’d suggest bringing character to a classic blazer look in subtle ways, like with cloak sleeves or flattering waist cinching.
Mock Neck Undershirts
Jacket-complementary shirts and blouses are another great way to freshen up a simple blazer. With your shorter-sleeve jackets, try layering a long sleeve shirt with ruffled cuffs. After a year of maximalist cottage-core fashion, we can expect 2023 to look more sleek and refined. That doesn’t mean that you can’t still play with layering textures, though! Try wearing a cream, ribbed mock neck long sleeve shirt with an emerald (or any dark jewel-toned) suit and dress pants set.
Wide Leg Trousers & Slim-fit Ankle Pants
Relaxed trousers, known to some as puddle pants, aren’t just fit for “that girl” on TikTok. Nothing says business casual more than a loose-fitting, wide leg pant reminiscent of traditional dress pants. Find the perfect slim-fit, and high quality ankle pants like this plaid pair from Madison Savile, a California-based brand that sources two-way stretch, wrinkle-resistant fabric from Japan. Cropped slim-fit trousers will elongate your legs, giving you a classic cigarette cut. Both long or short-hem pants pair nicely with your favorite (platform) sneakers if your workplace allows, or pointed toe ankle and calf boots.
Pointed-toe Shoes
Towards the end of 2023, we began to leave rounder-toed shoes behind in favor of the classic pointed toe. Sharp ballet flats and pointed slingback kitten heels will be everywhere this year, and for good reason: they really do go with almost everything.
Midi Skirts
We’re only one month in, and 2023 has already been marked as the year of the midi skirt. I love playing with textures here: try pairing a pleated satin, faux leather, or black denim midi skirt with an edgy top, like a t-shirt or muscle tank with shoulder pads, or this KIMHĒKIM Peter Pan collar blouse. Add a cropped leather jacket, and a pair of pointed toe calf boots to keep the edgy theme going!
