This last weekend, Abby Young Styling was invited to view local San Francisco artist and fashion designer Téodore Mata’s FILES: a showcase of his signature designs and brand new silhouettes. The show was a refreshing, immersive, and boundary pushing experience: one that we couldn’t wait to share with you all! Read on to learn more about the brand, and about our time at his fashion show last Saturday.
Utilizing both natural materials such as antlers and tree branches and readymade items like classic suit jackets, packing tape, and drop cloths, Téodore Mata’s designs transport you to a world on the edge of the familiar. Everything about the show was a part of Mata’s world-building: from the designs themselves, to the layered soundtrack with sounds of wild pigs and the ominous hums of industrial machinery, to the varying styles of runway choreography. The show felt startling in an exciting way, which was an intended reaction evoked by themes of bondage and the mysteries of unexplored wildlife.
We were thrilled to see our own stylist assistant Greta displaying Mata’s designs, as well as professional model and close collaborator Gisele working the runway. Bias aside, they were our favorites by far, and we were so proud to see them in such a different, creative context!
It’s rare for truly avant-garde designs to be pulled off with such elegance and wearability, but Téodore Mata and his team proved all of it to be possible! We left with quite the adrenaline buzz, and with so much inspiration for our own creative branding styling clients. We’re so excited to see what big things the brand has in store with their expansion to LA and New York — check out his website for pictures from his past fashion shows and collections, and follow him on Instagram to keep up with his newest work!
