Back to the Basics: A Stylist’s Recommended Underwear for Women

September 30, 2026

Underwear is one of those wardrobe basics you probably do not think much about until the wrong pair starts affecting the rest of your outfit. A visible panty line under trousers, uncomfortable fabric on a long day, or underwear that shifts underneath a dress can make otherwise great clothing harder to wear. The best underwear for women is not necessarily one specific brand or style. It is having a few reliable options that work underneath the clothing you actually wear.

Like bras, underwear is part of the foundation of your wardrobe. Fit, fabric, coverage, and the outfit going over it all matter.

What Makes a Good Pair of Underwear?

There is a reason most underwear drawers end up with solid favorites.

You may technically own twenty pairs, but there are probably five you reach for first. Those are usually the pairs that stay in place, feel comfortable, work underneath your clothing, and do not require much thought once you are dressed.

When I am thinking about underwear from a stylist’s perspective, I am most interested in what each pair’s function needs to be; the purpose it needs to provide for you.

Sometimes you need breathable everyday underwear. Sometimes you need something completely invisible. Sometimes you need more coverage or support. And sometimes your period changes what you need from your underwear entirely.

A functional underwear drawer accounts for all of those situations.

100 Percent Cotton Underwear

For everyday wear, 100 percent cotton underwear is one of the most practical places to start.

Cotton is breathable, comfortable, and easy to incorporate into an everyday wardrobe. If you are looking for cotton underwear for women, pay attention to the actual fabric composition rather than assuming anything described as “cotton” is entirely cotton.

Some underwear uses a cotton body with a small percentage of elastane or spandex to improve stretch and recovery. Others may only have a cotton gusset.

Reliable styles include:

  • Cotton briefs
  • Cotton bikinis
  • Cotton hipsters
  • Cotton boyshorts
  • High-rise cotton underwear

For your everyday pairs, prioritize the silhouette you can comfortably wear for hours without adjusting it.

No-Show Underwear

Then there are the outfits where you do not want to see your underwear at all.

Fitted trousers, leggings, slip skirts, knit dresses, and thinner fabrics can make seams much more noticeable. This is where a reliable no-show pair earns its place in your wardrobe.

Look for:

  • Bonded or laser-cut edges
  • Minimal seams
  • Lightweight fabrics
  • A cotton gusset
  • A secure fit that does not roll
  • A color close to your skin tone for lighter clothing

Underwear for Dresses and Skirts

Dresses introduce another consideration: coverage.

For a loose summer dress, fuller-coverage briefs or boyshorts may simply feel more comfortable and functional. Under a fitted dress, seamless underwear may create a smoother finish. With a lightweight or light-colored dress, the color of your underwear becomes just as important as the silhouette.

“Nude” is not one universal shade.

For clothing where you do not want the underwear to show through, look for a color relatively close to your own skin tone rather than automatically choosing white underneath white.

Depending on the dress, consider:

  • Seamless briefs
  • Thongs
  • Boyshorts
  • High-rise briefs
  • Skin-tone underwear

Underwear for Leggings and Fitted Pants

Leggings and fitted trousers tend to reveal more about the construction of your underwear than looser clothing does.

Thick seams, elastic around the leg opening, and underwear that is too small can all become more visible underneath a close-fitting garment.

This is where a seamless brief, thong, or laser-cut style can be useful.

Fit matters just as much as construction. If the underwear is digging into your body, switching to a different size or silhouette may do more for the finished outfit than simply searching for an even thinner fabric.

Period Underwear

Period underwear has become another useful category rather than something that needs to replace every pair in your drawer.

The best period panties for you will depend on your flow, preferred coverage, whether you use them independently or as backup protection, and how you want them to feel underneath clothing.

Consider:

  • Absorbency level
  • Coverage
  • Rise
  • Fabric
  • Gusset construction
  • Washing instructions
  • Whether the style is intended for daytime, overnight, or both

I also like having different silhouettes available. A fuller-coverage or high-rise pair may make sense overnight, while a lower-profile option can be easier underneath certain daytime outfits.

Building an Underwear Drawer That Actually Works

Think of underwear the same way you would think about the rest of a functional wardrobe: different pieces solve different problems.

Your everyday cotton underwear handles most days. A few no-show pairs support fitted clothing. Fuller coverage works when comfort matters most. Period underwear has a specific job. And a couple of less-visible options make dresses, trousers, and special-event clothing easier to wear.

What About the Best Underwear Brands?

There are plenty of best underwear brands lists online, but brand alone does not determine whether a pair will work for your body or wardrobe.

Fabric, rise, leg opening, seam construction, coverage, and fit all matter.

Try at least 3 styles from our preferred brands linked above to build your own underwear capsule, one that works for your wardrobe and your lifestyle.

When You Want More Than the Basics

Underwear may be hidden most of the time, but it can change how the clothing over it fits, falls, and feels.

If you repeatedly find yourself adjusting clothing, avoiding certain silhouettes, or wondering why something looks different on you than it did on the hanger, the issue may not be the garment itself. Sometimes the foundation underneath it needs attention.

At Abby Young Styling, we look at the entire wardrobe system, including fit, silhouette, lifestyle, and the foundational pieces that help clothing work the way it is supposed to.
